It was that time of the year when my son's school was celebrating its 100th day of the school. He is in grade 1. One day, he came home with a homework assignment. He was so excited and so was I as it was his first school project ever! He was asked to collect 100 items and also make a creative project with it. It could be a poster or an activity which will be displayed and presented in the class. The main objective of the project was to practice counting numbers to 100 by 10's, 5's and 2's.
I searched and selected a few creative project ideas on the internet and then showed it to my son. He said no to all of them. It took us a week to figure out what should he collect for the school project.
Until one day, when we went to the valley near our home to spend some time by the river, because my kids enjoy throwing the stones in the river. While we were busy throwing stones into the river, my son randomly said, "I collected two rocks!" and there came the idea. We collected 100 stones and brought them home, washed them and dried them on a tray.
This is how we practiced the main idea of the project by counting the stones to 100 by 10's, 5's and 2's.
100 stones have 10 sets of 10 stones.
100 stones have 20 sets of 5 stones.
100 stones have 50 sets of 2 stones.
Still we were clueless about what to make with them. We brainstormed some ideas, such as we could paint them, write numbers on them, but the question was how to present it creatively as a poster? And there comes the Papa's Magic question, "Hasan, where did you get these stones from?" and my son replied, "From the valley!" Ring! Ring! and the idea of making "the valley" popped!
Process of "The Valley" project
Things we used
White poster board, Pastels, a Circle cut-out to make Sun, Permanent marker, Double sided tape to stick stones, and 100 stones.
Making "The Valley"
First, we drew the valley and colored it by using pastels.
Sticking the Stones
Then we cut the small pieces of double sided tape and stick it on one side of all the stones.
(We tried glue gun first but it did not work well in sticking the stones).
.
Peeling the double sided tape cover from the stone.
Sticking the stones on the poster board.
In the end, coloring the Sun to shine on the Valley.
We are ready, set, and go to present our first school project ever, The Valley!
Hasan got A- in his presentation with a compliment that "You are an artist!"
I am curious to know about your great ideas for the 100th day of school project. Please do share your ideas in the comments.
